【Hidden Gems in Hong Kong】Rainy Day Retreat - A Day Trip to Tsim Sha Tsui Museums!
ART & CULTURE
Hong Kong, being in the subtropical region, experiences occasional rainfall, especially during the summer. Whether you're traveling or having a staycation, rainy days can dampen your spirits. However, Hong Kong has many great places to visit on rainy days, including some lesser-known attractions. Let us introduce three unique and off-the-beaten-path museums in Tsim Sha Tsui.
Tsim Sha Tsui Museum 1: Hong Kong Museum of History
The Hong Kong Museum of History, located in Tsim Sha Tsui, now unveils an expansive exhibition spanning over 1,100 square meters to the public, beginning in August 2024. This showcase features the ideologies of Chinese leader Xi Jinping's governance principles and a lunar soil sample retrieved during a mission by the China National Space Administration. Museum visitors can explore more than 40 exhibits at no cost, highlighting China's contemporary history alongside poignant artifacts from the significant pro-democracy movements and unrest that rattled Hong Kong in 2019. These demonstrations subsided with the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic in early 2020 and the implementation of a national security law by Beijing in June of the same year. Popular among Local Hong Kong media and journalists were miniature replicas of Chinese spacecraft, tanks, and fighter jets, along with two robotic canines in the exhibition. The museum offers a unique insight into these pivotal moments in history, providing visitors with a profound understanding of the recent past.

Tsim Sha Tsui Museum 3: Hong Kong Heritage Discovery Centre
The Hong Kong Heritage Discovery Centre, located in Kowloon Park, features a permanent exhibition focusing on heritage conservation. It showcases a variety of excavated artifacts and conservation documents, promoting Hong Kong's efforts, policies, and successful examples in heritage preservation. The centre itself has unique architectural features, originally being the barracks of the Whitfield Barracks on Wylie Road, built in the typical Victorian military style of colonial Hong Kong. The barracks exhibit a simple and unadorned style, without elaborate decorations, and the roofs are covered with Chinese-style asphalt tiles to withstand Hong Kong's humid weather. In 2005, the barracks were revitalized into the present-day Hong Kong Heritage Discovery Centre, preserving the majority of the original architectural elements. It was also honored with the "Judges' Commendation for Innovation" by the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Heritage Awards for Cultural Heritage Conservation.

Families venture in to explore its Greek-style architecture, marvel at exquisite tea ware, wander through lush greenery, and seek out the elusive tea trees. Located across the harbour from Tsim Sha Tsui in Hong Kong Park, this museum stands on the former site of the Commander-in-Chief of the British Forces' residence, with a history of 170 years. The museum exhibits a wide range of artifacts related to tea art and tea ware, including precious tea sets from ancient China to modern times and local ceramic tea ware. The late Dr. Lo Kwee Seong, founder of Vitasoy, generously donated over 600 items from his private collection, with Yixing tea ware being the most iconic among them. The museum has expanded with the addition of the Lo Kwee Seong Tea Art Gallery, featuring a tea lounge where tea enthusiasts can gather to enjoy tea and exchange knowledge about the "Art of Tea."
