Hong Kong is made for a family break
Cable car rides, beach outings and Mickey Mouse – the city and its islands have lots more for families than just shopping! But if you look up any guide to Hong Kong, you might be forgiven for thinking the only thing to do here is to shop. New malls crop up regularly if you want a designer label, but there are also bargains in the Chinese markets to be had. But clothes shopping is just no fun with young kids in town. Hong Kong is actually one of the best places to travel with kids because there is something for all ages. Here are five ideas for where to take your kids during your family vacation in Hong Kong to have one of your best family holidays ever.
5 of the Best Places to Travel with Kids on your Hong Kong Family Holiday
The Peak
Bearing that in mind, The Peak on Hong Kong island is a good place to get your bearings if you arrive here on a family vacation. A tram takes you up from the Central business district so steeply that if you put it down, your bag will slide across the floor to the back of the carriage (WARNING! Children find this fun!). At the top, you do emerge to a shopping mall but head 50 yards up a path past the shops, and there's a stunning view: a harbour teeming with boats large and small, fringed by a forest of skyscrapers and hemmed in by lush, green mountains. There is a nature trail, a playground, Madame Tussauds and a number of restaurants that cater well for children. There is a short walking path that you can explore at the top of the peak. It takes you all the way around the top of the peak and gives you scenic views of Hong Kong from many different perspectives. The path is by no means a hike, which means that the whole family will enjoy it!

Star Ferry to TST
When you come back down again, there's something mesmeric about a port in full flow. The iconic old green and white Star ferries still ply between Hong Kong Island and Tsim Sha Tsui, as they have for more than a century. Catch one at 8 pm and with your journey, you get a spectacular choreographed light show played out by the main harbourside skyscrapers for free. Perhaps before doing that you can enjoy a picnic at the Cyberport Waterfront Park. It’s got a wonderful view of Hong Kong and who doesn’t love a picnic, young or old and a run around a green space next to the water?

Day Trip to Lamma Island
Hiking isn’t always a favorite of those under ten, but if you can persuade them, then Lamma Island offers the Lamma Island Family Walk which allows you to take in the beautiful glistening beaches, hills, fishing villages and the best seafood around. If cycling sounds preferable there are plenty of options. Tai Wai/ Sha Tin to Tai Po starts along the Shing Mun River and takes you through the Hong Kong Science Park, the Pak Shek Kok Promenade as well as the Tolo cycling track – Hong Kong’s most picturesque cycling route! With cafés dotted along the route and Tai Po Waterfront at the end, this three-hour-long route could easily be stretched into an all-day affair. Lamma Island is a great place to get away from the bustling city for some family time during your Hong Kong family holiday.
