【Hong Kong Street Art】Exploring Hong Kong Murals: A Guide to Central Street Art Hotspots!

ART & CULTURE

While strolling through the towering skyscrapers of Central, apart from the hustle and bustle, you can also find Hong Kong street art everywhere. Numerous murals are scattered throughout the different streets and alleys of Central, captivating the attention of passersby who can't help but pause and admire these artworks. They even attract crowds of people standing in front of the murals to take photos and "check-in," earning Central the nickname "Central Mural Street." Here, we introduce four must-visit Hong Kong murals in Central that are perfect for photo opportunities!

Route Directions: From Hotel ICON, take the MTR (Mass Transit Railway) to Hong Kong Station, Exit E1. Then, walk along the pedestrian bridge leading to the HSBC Main Building. From there, take the Central-Mid-Levels Escalator System (Mid-Levels Escalator) to reach the first stop of the Central Mural Street, which is located at 48 Elgin Street. The entire journey takes approximately 19 minutes.

Route Overview: 48 Elgin Street > Shingo Art > Intersection of 46A Granville Road and 48 Hollywood Road > Tank Lane.

First Stop of Central Mural Street: 48 Elgin Street

Walking along Elgin Street, the first mural that catches your eye is a vibrant and colorful artwork. Created by British street artists Dan Kitchener, also known as Dank, and Charles Williams, this mural showcases their unique urban impressionist style. The artwork depicts a rainy night in Hong Kong, with rainwater pooling on the bustling streets, forming small puddles. The soft glow of neon lights reflects the vibrant colors of the city. Inspired by the local food bank, Feeding Hong Kong, Dank and Charles included the phrase "捨不得浪費" (meaning "Can't bear to waste") in the bottom left corner of the mural. Through this addition, they hope to encourage viewers to reflect on the issue of food waste in modern society when they "check-in" at the mural

"Check-in" Tip: When posing in front of this Hong Kong street art, you can hold a transparent umbrella and imitate the walking posture of the figures in the mural to blend into the artwork.

Second Stop of Central Mural Street: Shingo Art

(located at the intersection of Shelley Street and Hollywood Road)

Japanese artist Shingo Katori, invited by the Hong Kong Tourism Board, spent three nights creating a mural near the Central-Mid-Levels Escalator. Katori mentioned that during his visit to Hong Kong years ago for a film shoot, fans affectionately called him "Big Mouth Lion." This time, he wanted to bring vitality to the people of Hong Kong and tourists from around the world, much like a dragon. With boldness and ingenuity, he combined vibrant shades of fiery red, Bauhinia flowers, and a mini skyline to weave together an animated dragon. He named the mural "Big Mouth Lion," reflecting his personal style. On the artwork, he included the words "大口龍仔" (Big Mouth Lion), the Hong Kong telephone code "+852," and "#hkshingoart," signifying his connection to Hong Kong through his creation.

"Check-in" Tip: Since the mural is located on a slope, you can pretend to walk up or down the slope, allowing photographers to capture a natural walking pose. What’s more," you can echo Katori's encouragement by adding the hashtag "#香港慎吾アート" (meaning "Hong Kong Shingo Art") to your photos.

Third Stop of Central Mural Street: Intersection of 46A Granville Road and 48 Hollywood Road

Every time you arrive at the intersection of Granville Road and Hollywood Road, you will always see a crowd of people waiting in line in front of a giant mural, eagerly waiting to "check-in." This world-renowned street art was created by local graffiti artist Alex Croft, who showcases his unique style through intricate brushwork and vibrant colors. The mural depicts the urban landscape of Hong Kong, including crowded streets, towering buildings, and iconic red taxis. Through this artwork, Croft aims to capture the unique energy and charm of Hong Kong.

"Check-in" Tip: In front of this mural, you can imitate the poses of the figures in the artwork, such as standing at the street corner, observing, taking photos, or picking up the red telephone receiver. Don't forget to add the hashtag "#HongKongStreetArt" to your photos and share your mural experience with others!

Fourth Stop of Central Mural Street: Water Lane

As you walk towards Water Lane, you can see this dynamic and larger-than-life mural of Bruce Lee from a distance. Created by Korean graffiti artist Xeva, this Hong Kong street art showcases Xeva's signature "cutout style," vividly portraying Bruce Lee's various expressions from multiple perspectives, paying homage to the legendary martial arts superstar.

"Check-in" Tip: When you arrive here, you can strike a Jeet Kune and do pose in front of the mural, capturing a photo that is both cool and powerful!
