EXUBERANCE ART EXHIBITION BY DAVID STEIN

ART & CULTURE

From Tuesday, 27 March through Monday, 2 April, to complement Art Basel Hong Kong, visit the hotel’s breathtaking ninth floor poolside venue, for a chance to view “Exuberance” – an exclusive exhibition of abstract-expressionist oil paintings by Swiss born, Hong Kong-based artist David Stein.

As layered, complicated and passionate as the artist himself, these vibrant works have been chosen to evoke a sense of joy and excitement, and are best enjoyed with a cocktail in hand while soaking up the glittering skyline vistas. While the 27 March event is a private and by-invitation event, the public is welcome to visit the exhibition from 28 March until 2 April on the ninth floor. For access to the ninth floor, please approach the Concierge at the hotel lobby.

Stein has chosen vibrant examples of his abstract painting for this exhibition as a joyous counterpoint to the prevailing artistic moods. "I hope my work will cause people to smile, to reflect and to find something joyous," Stein says. Stein is known to many in Hong Kong and abroad as David Preisig, the name he took as a hotelier. The last of his three decades in the industry were with the Shangri-la group. Wherever he was posted, he painted.

About David Stein, Abstract Artist

David Stein's paintings are like the artist – layered, complicated and passionate. The abstracts are polychromatic flashes of insight. The works are rich in emotion and grounded in a deep spirituality. Life. Love. Hope. These are the three words which guide him. He tries to be an optimist in a world of pessimists; a romantic amidst misogynists; and a believer amidst doubters.

Where there is darkness, he will find a gentle light. When there is greed, he will celebrate generosity. When there is evil, he will seek good. Where there is opportunity, he will bring laughter.

Stein is an intensely private person. He has moved about four continents cloaked in anonymity as an artist but known by many abroad and in Hong Kong as David Preisig, hotelier. The last of his three decades in the hospitality industry were with the Shangri-la group. Wherever he was posted, he painted. Last year he retired to take up painting fulltime.

He hopes his viewers will find something of themselves in his work or at least something inspiring to look at. He believes that hope and love are essential to life and his paintings express that. "Without hope, there cannot be love and without love there is no life. That is why my paintings always have a point of light and a ray of hope to find in them."

David has been painting since childhood in Switzerland where he drew on his mother's walls. His more mature works are in collections in Hong Kong, America, Israel, Canada, Switzerland, Australia, South Korea, New Zealand, Turkey, Thailand, Austria, Germany, Great Britain and Ireland.
