Hotel ICON: More Than What Meets the Eye

OTHERS

In Issue Five of Global Traveller Magazine, Karl Schutt elaborates on the uniqueness and individuality of Hotel ICON that makes it shine unlike any other.

A place unlike any other

Situated in the stylish Tsim Sha Tsui district, this 262 rooms property really is the hotel of the future.

The lobby is truly inviting with a huge multi story atrium, a living wall towering high above you and a cascading staircase to the left, with a massive curved seating area in front.

Combine this with eager staff dressed by famed Hong Kong designer Barney Cheng and lovely tunes playing, huge retro spot lights on stands and you sense you may be in for something special.

Once you finish your paperless check in, it's time to check out your suite.

Directely in front of the lounge is a massive U shaped meeting room facing a large TV complete with internet capabilties. But the best is yet to come, the view over the Hong Kong harbour from the bedroom is quite simply breathtaking, as far as the eye can see in either direction. You really have no choice but to sit down and take it all in for awhile.

After awhile, you notice the high spec mobile phone next to your bed, however this is no ordinary phone. The Handy phone is one that lets you call to 27 countries internationally for FREE. You can also use it around Hong Kong as a personal free WiFI hotspot for your own device.

Why is Hotel ICON considered the hotel model of the future?

To start with, it's not a conventional hotel managed by a corporate chain. Rather, this unique property is wholly owned by The Hong Kong Polytechnic University for the purpose of enriching learning and providing stellar guest experiences and satisfaction.

Stylish and artistic, there are amazing, large art pieces on every floor of the hotel. One of such highlights is world-renowned designer, Vivienne Tam's Suite on the 27th floor.

Walk through an unmarked door in the lobby and suddenly it's like walking into Willy Wonka's chocolate factory. This is the university campus, where eager students hone their skills in the university's Chinese, Western and French bakery food laboratories.

In addition, there is also a wine lab, a student-run restaurant and a wing on the side of the hotel for the university professors' living quarters.
